Vera Tan has more than 17 years experience in legal and banking. Vera possesses unique experience of having both practice legal and banking experiences with a deep understanding of financial products, capital markets and otc markets.
Vera graduated with a law degree with honours and a Bentham Prize for High Achievement from University College London in 2000. She was called to the UK Bar and Hong Kong Bar in 2001 and she practised as a barrister in Hong Kong up till 2005. During her years as a practising barrister, she had conducted various cases in commercial, civil and commercial crime with various court experiences including Court of Appeal and Court of Final Appeal. She had successfully defended her client single handedly up against then Senior Counsel and now Secretary for Justice Ms Teresa Cheng S.C. in a landmark construction case in Hong Kong in 2004.
Between 2005-2009, she made a successful switch from a practising barrister to starting up a new third party group in Goldman Sachs Asia Fixed Income Currencies and Commodities division (“FICC”) facing clients such as external private banks, asset managers and commercial banks in the manufacturing and selling of Goldman Sachs products. Vera was ranked consecutively in the first quartile internally in Goldman Sachs and was promoted to Executive Director in 2008. Vera left Goldman Sachs FICC in 2009 to engage in structured finance, private equity and capital raising with Mizuho as Director and as Managing Director at Sun Hung Kai Financial. Her clients included private equity funds, family offices, institutional investors, asset managers and corporates in different jurisdictions.
Vera joined Deutsche Bank in 2015 as head of Hong Kong Global Markets Debt business lines compliance managing a total of 8 different business lines across corporate treasury sales, ficc trading, institutional sales, special situations, structured finance, distressed trading, treasury and pool. Under her advisory compliance guidance, she had driven many successful new product launches such as the recent Bond connect as well as many cross border transactions including but not limited to offshore/onshore lending and trade related fx transactions. She had also successfully ran and managed different compliance reviews and testings, regulatory implementations, regulatory inspections, regulatory notifications and incidents reporting. Vera left Deutsche Bank in 2018 and she is founder of VAM Advisory Limited, a strategic and management consultancy for listed corporates, fintech companies, venture and growth companies, asset managers and financial institutions.
